The Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has this week confirmed a detection of H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in Western Australia.
As a key regional link between government agencies and local communities, the Pilbara Development Commission is sharing this information to ensure local stakeholders, agricultural operators, and residents remain informed and vigilant.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is leading Western Australia's response, working in collaboration with Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and the Department of Health, with national coordination led by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
Stakeholders across the Pilbara — particularly those managing pastoral properties, agricultural enterprises, or poultry — are urged to remain vigilant for signs of the disease in poultry or domestic birds.
If you notice unusual numbers of sick or dead birds (wild or domestic), do not touch them. Report the sighting immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
The Pilbara Development Commission will continue to monitor updates from lead biosecurity agencies and share relevant impacts for our region as they arise.
