Port Hedland marina development gets green light

Oct 25, 2016

The Pilbara Development Commission welcomes the announcement that funding has been approved by the Government of Western Australia for the Port Hedland Spoilbank Marina Precinct project.

This major project is made possible by the Royalties for Regions program and supports the Pilbara Cities vision of creating vibrant and liveable cities.

Pilbara Development Commission Acting Chief Executive Officer Trish Barron said the announcement was a game-changer for Port Hedland.

“The Commission views this project as critically important to the continued growth and diversification of Port Hedland’s economy,” Ms Barron said.

The project aims to meet the high demand for recreational boating facilities, while also capitalising on the waterfront location by creating a vibrant public square incorporating retail and commercial sites, and a community event space.

“High quality, modern infrastructure is becoming a key characteristic of the ‘new’ Pilbara, which also boasts affordable living and greater liveability for residents,” Ms Barron said.

“In addition to supporting the Pilbara Cities vision, the project also strongly aligns with the Pilbara Regional Investment Blueprint priorities by delivering economic infrastructure that will support marine based businesses and tourism ventures.”

“The Commission has been proud to partner with LandCorp and the Town of Port Hedland in supporting the development of this project. Both organisations have demonstrated unparalleled commitment to making this project a reality by delivering a transformational opportunity that meets the current and future needs of Port Hedland.”

The Port Hedland Spoilbank Marina Precinct announcement was jointly made by the Premier of Western Australia and Minister for Regional Development.
