Construction underway on the Web Business Hub

Dec 12, 2017

Construction is now underway on the Web Business Hub, Port Hedland’s first co-working and innovation centre located in the heart of The West End.

The milestone was marked by a sod turning on site today with project partners Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce, Pilbara Development Commission and BHP, along with builder Emirge Pty Ltd, and newly-appointed coordinator of the Web Business Hub, Kira Smith.

Once complete, the state-of-the-art facility will boast flexible co-working areas, office suites and meeting and function spaces to support business start-ups wanting to take the leap from home-based business to micro-business, as well as existing small businesses. Businesses will have access to comprehensive learning and mentoring programs at a low cost with flexible working arrangements.

BHP Pilbara Communities Manager, Chris Cottier, said BHP is excited to be a part of the project, “This project will promote the growth and diversification of the East Pilbara business community. We hope the Web Business Hub leads local innovation, fosters entrepreneurial activity and, most importantly, assists to break down the barriers small businesses face.”

Pilbara Development Commission Chief Executive Officer Terry Hill said he was pleased to see a high number of locally-based subcontractors working on the project. “The construction tender placed a strong focus on local builders and contractors, which has resulted in 75 per cent of the contract value going directly to Pilbara businesses. The Web Business Hub will be a place for local businesses, built by local businesses.”

The milestone comes as the Chamber appointed Port Hedland local Kira Smith as the coordinator of the new facility earlier this month. “I am excited to be appointed as the coordinator of the Web Business Hub. I am looking forward to engaging and connecting with the small business community, leveraging from my own personal experience in business and with innovation centres.”

Businesses interested in using the space are encouraged to register their interest with the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce via email on

Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2018. The Web Business Hub will become part of a network of business innovation centres in the Pilbara, joining the newly-completed space in Newman known as The Edge, and the planned Karratha Enterprise Hub.

The Web Business Hub (formerly known as the East Pilbara Innovation Centre) is made possible by the State Government through the Pilbara Development Commission, BHP and the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
