Opportunities abound in new Pilbara

Jul 18, 2017

The Pilbara Regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry will play host to an esteemed cast of leaders from business, government and industry at the 2017 New Pilbara Economic Development Conference.

Presented by the Karratha, Port Headland, Newman and Onslow Chambers of Commerce, the one day program on August 29th at the Hyatt Regency Perth will feature presentations on the economic state of the region and investment priority areas that will unlock economic potential.

John Lally, CEO of the Karratha District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI), said the conference would attract key business stakeholders to engage in a spirited and timely discussion about where the region has come from, and where it’s headed in the future.

“This forum will explore the forward focus towards 2030, and the industries which will provide diversification and growth in this period beyond traditional economic drivers,” said Mr. Lally.

“Last year’s New Pilbara event was the first, and an overwhelming success. For many, the Pilbara is well known for its mining sector, and therefore this forum serves to challenge this perception and highlight innovative projects and initiatives that are either already underway or planned for the region. The New Pilbara 2 has a diverse focus and an economy which will withstand the fluctuations in the resource sector.

“The Pilbara has caught up in terms of economic and community infrastructure, which now meets the demands of the region’s population now and into the future. There’s no slowing down in the Pilbara, and we’re gearing up for the next wave of economic activity, where new opportunities are emerging which will facilitate growth in energy, tourism, agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

“These opportunities, as well as factors including affordable living and revitalised communities are the drivers shaping The New Pilbara as a place people want to invest and live in,” he added.

Pilbara Development Commission Chief Executive Officer Terry Hill said he was pleased to see such a high level of collaboration between the Chambers of Commerce across the Pilbara.

“We’re a powerful force when we work together as a region,” Mr Hill said. “The Commission is proud to be providing support to the Pilbara Regional Chambers of Commerce to devise a conference program that is thought-provoking, impactful and relevant in both a global and local context,” he added.

“The diversity of the program sessions reflects the myriad opportunities in the region which will drive long term, sustainable economic activity and job creation.”

Registrations are now open for The New Pilbara 2. Further information can be found at www.thenewpilbara.com.au. The Event Partner for The New Pilbara 2 is Rio Tinto and the Major Sponsor is the Pilbara Development Commission.
