Pilbara Dialogue

SW & GryllsBACKGROUND

The Pilbara Dialogue was established by the Commission in early 2008 as a high level round table for the exchange of key information and the development of coordinated strategies and actions between major stakeholders involved in the planning and development of the Pilbara region.

Critical issues identified through the Dialogue are directed to the Minister for Regional Development, the Commission’s Board, appropriate Government agencies and relevant organisations as part of the process of seeking strategic outcomes.

Water Forum
The Pilbara Dialogue Meeting held on the 18 September was used as the platform for the inaugural Pilbara Water Forum which was facilitated by the Pilbara Development Commission and the Department for Regional Development and Lands.

The Forum afforded the attendees the opportunity of learning firsthand the outcomes from the State Government’s Pilbara Integrated Water Supply Prefeasibility Study released in May 2009 and to discuss the potential opportunities and benefits arising as the Government moves into the next stage of development.

The Study identified a range of options for water in the Pilbara including; mine dewater for various uses; pipeline construction to integrate source with demand; and desalination options.

Following on from the Study the State Government is planning to formally call for EOI’s from the public and private sectors to submit applications for funding to investigate and test the feasibility of pilot projects and further works.  The Government is keen to receive proposals which leverage opportunities to partner with the Commonwealth Government, industry and Indigenous communities.
