
BACKGROUND
The Pilbara Development Commission established the Pilbara Community Foundation in 2007 under the trusteeship of the Western Australian Community Foundation to benefit local communities of the region. The PDC Board has assumed the role of the interim Local Advisory Committee for the Foundation.
Funding from the Foundation will be used to build community capacity across the region through initiatives and projects in areas such as:
• Providing for the needs of families
• Promoting youth development and engagement
• Advancing education
• Providing community facilities
• Promoting arts and culture
OFFICIAL LAUNCH AND INAUGURAL GRANTS
The Pilbara Community Foundation was officially launched by His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC, Governor of Western Australian and Patron of the Western Australia Community Foundation in Newman on 11 May 2009. To mark this auspicious occasion, His Excellency announced the nine recipients of the inaugural Foundation grants including:
• Dampier Family Playgroup;
• Hedland Toy Library;
• Karratha Community House;
• Local Information Network Karratha;
• Newman Youth Services;
• SAFE;
• Sunshine Playgroup;
• Onslow Little Learners Playgroup; and
• Wickham Playgroup.
LATEST UPDATE
The Pilbara Community Foundation provides an opportunity for all those living and working in the region to invest in the future of the Pilbara community. Giving to the Pilbara Community Foundation will be helping Pilbara communities to help themselves, creating a legacy for today and tomorrow.
The Commission is currently developing a prospectus to encourage gifts from individuals, groups or organisations. Income earned from the endowment will be used to provide a reliable and regular source of funds for charitable purposes to build community capacity across the Pilbara, with the corpus remaining in perpetuity.
