BACKGROUND
Jigalong is a “dry” Indigenous community of predominately Martu people located in the Little Sandy Desert in the Pilbara region of WA. Jigalong is located in the Shire of East Pilbara, approximately 165km east of Newman and 520km south east of Port Hedland. The community has a population of over 300 people with a high proportion of young children and youth between the ages of 5-24 years.
LATEST UPDATE
The Commission has been working with the Jigalong Council and community on a number of projects to improve the economic and social sustainability of the community. The projects are aimed at providing appropriate infrastructure and programs to support education, skills development and employment outcomes, improve the well being of community members and provide alternate activities for young people.
Jigalong Telecentre – Community Resource Centre
Jigalong community was approved for a Telecentre under the WA Telecentre Network Program. State Government funding has been made available through the Regional Collocation Scheme and Pilbara Fund to refurbish an unused portion of the Administration Centre to house the Telecentre. The Jigalong Telecentre project is being managed by the Department of Housing and is due to commence in the coming months.
Jigalong Community Park
The Commission attended a planning meeting in Jigalong in November 2008 which identified the development of a park as a priority for the community including green space with suitable playground equipment and other park amenities such as a bbq, seating, shade and landscaping.
The Commission has since worked with the community to engage a landscape architect to design and prepare a cost estimate for the park with funding provided by BHP Billiton. The concept design for the park has been approved by community and is estimated at approximately $1m.
The Commission is working with the community to identify funding for the project.
