Port Hedland Dust Suppression Program

BACKGROUND

In 2005, the State Government committed $500,000 towards managing the impacts of dust in the down town area of Port Hedland. The PDC developed the Dust Abatement program, aimed at improving the aesthetic appearance of the Town centre and assisting in the cleaning of community facilities.

Through the program, the Town of Port Hedland received funds to purchase and maintain a Green Machine Street Sweeper for the cleaning and maintenance of community assets and an All Terrain Litter Vacuum.

In addition the program funded the exterior cleaning of buildings along Wedge, Edgar, Anderson & Richardson Streets and The Esplanade in downtown Port Hedland. The 2 year cleaning program was managed by the PDC and was a strategic partnership with the BHP Billiton Iron Ore dust mitigation strategies program.

The first round of exterior cleaning of buildings was performed in 2007 with 42 government, business & residential properties involved. The 2008 round of cleaning saw a further 40 business and residential buildings cleaned. As part of this project businesses were given the opportunity to have business signage which had suffered from dust buildup replaced during the cleaning process.
