The State Government of Western Australia's Royalties for Regions program has invested $1.7 billion into Pilbara Cities. The Pilbara Cities vision is to build the population of Karratha and Port Hedland into liveable cities of 50,000 people, and Newman to 15,000 by 2035, with other Pilbara towns growing into more attractive and sustainable local communities.

Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework

The Pilbara Planning and Infrastructure Framework is the key strategic document that provides the methodology for delivery of the Pilbara Cities Vision and sets out regional planning principles, together with goals, objectives and actions that will improve the lives of people living in the Pilbara while maintaining and enhancing the character and environment of the region.

The draft Framework defines the strategic direction for the future development of the region over the next 25 years with a focus on schools, health centres, roads and recreational areas such as the planned marinas in Dampier and in Port Hedland.

The framework addresses the scale and distribution of future population growth and housing development, as well as identifying strategies for economic growth, environmental issues, transport, infrastructure, water resources, tourism and the emerging impacts of climate change.
